Homemade Non-Toxic Dishwasher Detergent

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1 cup washing soda
  • 1/4 cup citric acid
  • 1/4 cup coarse sea salt
  • Optional: 10-20 drops of essential oils (such as lemon, lavender, or tea tree) for fragrance and additional cleaning power

Instructions:

  1. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, combine the baking soda, washing soda, citric acid, and coarse sea salt. Stir well to ensure the ingredients are evenly distributed.
  2. Add Essential Oils (Optional): If desired, add 10-20 drops of your preferred essential oils to the dry mixture. Essential oils not only add a pleasant fragrance but also provide additional cleaning properties.
  3. Mix Thoroughly: Mix the dry ingredients and essential oils (if using) thoroughly until well combined. You can use a whisk or spoon to ensure even distribution.
  4. Store in an Airtight Container: Transfer the homemade dishwasher detergent to an airtight container for storage. A glass jar or plastic container with a tight-fitting lid works well. Be sure to label the container with the contents and usage instructions.
  5. Usage Instructions: To use, add 1-2 tablespoons of the homemade dishwasher detergent to the detergent compartment of your dishwasher before running a cycle. Adjust the amount based on the size and soil level of your dishwasher load.
  6. Enjoy Clean, Sparkling Dishes: Run your dishwasher as usual, and enjoy clean, sparkling dishes without the worry of harsh chemicals or toxins

Note:

  • This homemade dishwasher detergent is designed for use in automatic dishwashers and may not be suitable for handwashing dishes.
  • If you have hard water, you may need to add a rinse aid or vinegar to your dishwasher to prevent spots and residue on your dishes.
  • Store the homemade detergent in a cool, dry place away from moisture to prevent clumping.

NOTE:

  1. Chemical Ingredients: Many commercial dishwasher detergents contain ingredients such as synthetic fragrances, surfactants, preservatives, and phosphates. Some of these chemicals may be irritants or allergens, and long-term exposure to certain substances could potentially pose health risks.
  2. Phosphates: Phosphates are commonly used in dishwasher detergents to help soften water and improve cleaning performance. However, excessive phosphate runoff from dishwashing can contribute to water pollution and ecological damage. Some studies suggest that high levels of phosphates in waterways may promote algae growth, leading to oxygen depletion and harm to aquatic ecosystems.
  3. Fragrances and Dyes: Synthetic fragrances and dyes used in commercial dishwasher detergents may contain compounds known as phthalates, which have been linked to adverse health effects in some studies. Phthalates are often used as plasticizers and can potentially disrupt hormone function or contribute to respiratory issues in sensitive individuals.
  4. Skin Sensitivities: Some people may experience skin irritation or allergic reactions when exposed to certain chemicals in commercial dishwasher detergents. Symptoms may include redness, itching, or dryness of the skin, particularly on the hands or areas of contact.

While regulatory agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) oversee the safety of chemicals used in consumer products, it’s essential to use caution when handling commercial dishwasher detergents and follow recommended usage instructions. Whenever possible, choose products labeled as “eco-friendly,” “biodegradable,” or “fragrance-free” to minimize exposure to potentially harmful chemicals.

If you have concerns about the safety of commercial dishwasher detergents or experience adverse reactions when using these products, consider exploring natural or homemade alternatives using simple, non-toxic ingredients. Additionally, practicing good ventilation and avoiding direct contact with detergents can help reduce exposure and minimize potential health risks.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA): The EPA provides information and resources on the environmental impact of household cleaning products, including dishwasher detergents. You can visit the EPA’s website to access fact sheets, reports, and guidance on chemicals of concern and their potential health and environmental effects.

By making your own dishwasher detergent using natural ingredients, you can effectively clean your dishes while minimizing exposure to harmful chemicals and toxins. Enjoy the peace of mind that comes with using a non-toxic alternative that’s safe for your family and the environment.
